Zhang Dali uses the symbol AK-47 repeatedly to build up the portraits of the migrant workers.
AK-47 is a type of Russian machine gun and thus is foreign, a tool of aggression and a sign of
violence. One cannot help but remark that it is a fitting symbol for the hard lives many of the
migrant workers live. However, by isolating these faces on canvas, the artist presents them as
individuals. Yet, by using the same symbol to build up each portrait, one is not allowed to forget
that they are still one of this mass of migrant workers.
